Life Lessons Learned from the Ice Storm
Some valuable lessons I took away from the Ole Miss Ice Storm of 26’ include many different eye opening experiences, such as never take what you have for granted. With this being said, we are so fortunate as a University and community to have the resources and opportunities available to us on a day to day basis, and when something disastrous happens, it is so apparent when all these things are taken away and you really realize how hard people work behind the scenes to cater to us and make sure we are keeping ourselves on a steady path.
When the University lost power, heat, and we became scarce on food, that’s when I realized that we have been living in a bliss for as long as we’ve been here, and that it’s a blessing that people work so hard every single day to keep these things up and running for us. I also realized how important it is to surround yourself with people who care about you, who want to help you as much as they want to help themselves, and who you truly care about. I think that if I was completely alone and without my friends during the ice storm, I wouldn’t have done as well as I did. Good company always makes times better, no matter the circumstances.
Something I learned about myself is that I love to be a provider for my friends and people I care about; because I was constantly making sure they were fed and warm whenever I would be, I made them food and brought them bottled water; because I think it is so important to show people how much you truly care about them when you have no idea what the future holds.
In relation to these experiences, I learned how much my family truly loves me and how far they would go to make sure I was safe and taken care of. With buying plane tickets, ordering food to the dorms, sending links to places with power, I quickly learned that some peoples parents wouldn’t go the extra mile for them the way mine would go for me, and how fortunate I am to cherish it because not many people can say the same.
